St. Andrew’s in 2010

2010 was our anniversary year – St. Andrew’s was 20. The year was full of related events in all areas of our activities – presentations, scholarly and public conferences, book launches. It was a fruitful year despite of all its challenges.

Summer Theological Institutes and Public Conferences

We continued our highly successful Summer Theological Institutes (STI), organizing several sessions in Moscow: the 9th STI and the 6th Summer Institute on Theology and Science on 21 June – 3 July. These were vibrant meetings with very intensive studies and active communication between students and teachers. Ca 70 students came from all over Russia, Ukraine, Belarus and other countries and represented all major confessions. Many of them were established specialists and university professors. Teachers were St. Andrew’s best professors.

Conference Let’s Regale: Images of Feast in Theology, Philosophy, Literature, and Arts in memory of Natalia Trauberg on 9-10 April, an anniversary conference The Abolition of Man? Person in Theology, Culture, and Education on 25 September and the 15th St. Andrew’s Readings on contemporary theological issues on 11-13 December were open to a wide audience and gathered many friends of our Institute.

Interconfessional and International Cooperation

Number of important international conferences have been organized in connection with our anniversary: The Bible and Scholarship: Bridging the Gap between the Academy and the Church, Moscow, 15-18 September (it was held jointly with Kerk in Actie and was combined with the 1th Consultation of a growing Orthodox-Protestant network “Development of Ecumenical Leadership in Mission”), Theology of Creation, Moscow, 13-17 October (jointly with STOQ project, Rome) and Theology of Person in Eastern and Western Christianity, Bose, Italy, 21-24 October (in cooperation with the Monastery of Bose).

St. Andrew’s rector and other faculty members participated in many international events including the annual conference of Journées d’Arras dedicated to Christian-Muslim dialogue (Madrid), John Templeton Foundation Board of Advisers meetings (New York and Oxford), the 3th Consultation of Theological Faculties in Europe (Graz), 5th International East-West Symposium of New Testament Scholars (Minsk) organized by SNTS, the annual conference of Oikosnet-Europe in Helsinki and many others.

Publishing Program

St. Andrew’s is a recognized leader in academic theological publishing and our books are in demand at Orthodox, Catholic and Protestant seminaries, university theology departments and, most important, in the secular market. We are approaching the 300th volume published by St. Andrew’s since 1993. In 2010 we published 20 volumes including:

• “In the Beginning...”: the Story of Creation and the Fall by Benedict XVI

• An Introduction to Early Judaism by James VanderKam

• God after Darwin. A Theology of Evolution by John Haught

• Introduction to Philosophy of Religion by Michael Murray and Michael Rea

• Last volumes of the commentary New Testament for Everyone by Tom Wright

Our participation in international book exhibitions in Frankfurt, Moscow, Lviv and Kiev helps us to develop cooperation with leading publishers and book distributors worldwide. And we maintain our special book distribution projects to theological, university and regional libraries and to theological graduates – though at a reduced scale this year.
